Bakusen was first a student of the famous painter Seihō Takeuchi then he studied at the Kyōto City University of Arts. After graduating he joined the Kokuga Sōsaku Kyōkai (i.e., Society for the Creation of National Painting). Bakusen used the nihonga painting style which was fashionable at the time.
